With nothing all that interesting to do this past Friday night, I called up some friends last minute seeing what feasible plans they had and what they could do to entertain me.
“A friend of mine on the football team is playing at Across the Street Bar,” said one of the friends.
Okay, so it wasn’t anything too exciting, and I might have had a better time sitting on my couch watching “Wedding Crashers” on DVD, but I decided to get out and catch a lineman strumming on his banjo.
I was pleasantly surprised, however, when I caught the band preceding Johnny Football, Kessler.
The semi-alternative rock band based right here in Dallas is made up of lead singer Mike Mitchell, guitarist Stephen Tucker, bassist Chris Mitchell and drummer Jonathan Ogle, an SMU student.
The first thing that caught my attention was a group of girls singing (quite passionately, I might add) along with the band to its original songs. How could they know all the words to Kessler’s songs when I didn’t even know it existed?
After viewing its MySpace band page, it’s apparent that Kessler already has quite the following and its popularity can only keep growing.
Mitchell’s voice doesn’t sound like your everyday local band of garage monkeys; rather, he sounds professional, very sexy like someone you’d expect to hear singing on the radio. One song it performed Friday night, “Outside Your Window,” which you can hear on its MySpace page, will make any girl fall for these guys. These guys got game.
And a member of the band’s parents sitting in the audience looking on proudly at their sons was just too cute.
Kessler isn’t all hugs and kisses and proves it has a harder edge with many of its other songs, like “Promise” and “My Kingdom.”
The band finished up with a cover of Weezer’s “The Sweater Song,” and despite its self-deprecating review of the performance, I didn’t think it was all that bad. You guys should give yourselves more credit.
Oh, and Johnny Football’s name is actually Charlie Berry.
