Ed Board just wants to say one thing about spring break: FINALLY. This much-needed week off couldn’t come at a better time.
We know your minds have been focused on midterms and making good grades. Yeah, right! The only thing you can think about is the sand between your toes and a cold one in your hand with another one on the way.
With those things in mind, Ed Board wants to give you all (well, those few souls who are still on campus) some advice for a safe and happy Spring Break since your parents aren’t here to nag you.
1. Wear sunscreen, even if you’re going skiing and especially if you’re going somewhere sunny. You never know if you might fall asleep in the sun. Fact: one bad sunburn in your life could lead to skin cancer down the road. And besides, no one wants to make out with a lobster at the nightclub.
2. Stay in a group, or at least with one other person you know (key words). Make sure this is someone that you’ve known for more than an hour. Do not leave the club or accept a ride from someone you aren’t familiar with, or even worse, go alone. Boys, even you need to watch out for each other. There are some dominatrix ladies out there! It’s a sad thing that students can’t enjoy a week off without worrying if they will come home or not, but it’s a reality. We’ve all seen the horror stories. Please don’t be the next person they’re searching for.
3. “What happens in (insert spring break destination here) stays there.” Okay, that might have been true sometime in the Dark Ages. But we are in the Digital Age. Whatever you do will most likely come out in the form of a humiliating picture on Facebook or in a swift phone call to your significant other. Be smart, people. Showing your goodies in front of an MTV camera or cheating on your boyfriend/girlfriend will only cause you heartache when you get back. The truth always comes out.
4. Speaking of making mistakes, be selective. You know what we mean here. If you are single and going on spring break, try and see past the beer goggles to decide if it’s really worth it. And if it is, protect yourself. The health center is always full of students after Spring Break wondering, “Why am I red and itchy?” You don’t want to be one of those people. That’s even more embarrassing than how it happened.
Bottom line: Take care of yourselves and each other. This should be the most relaxing time of the year. Don’t think about the paper that’s due two weeks after you get back. This week is like a gift from SMU.
So go enjoy it! Whether you’re going on a cruise, going skiiing or heading home, have fun and be careful.
