SMU claims victory over Duke in the 94th minute Sunday afternoon (1-0) at the Duke Classic.
The game-winning goal was made by Senior Artur Ivo. SMU now stands with a record of 1-2 this season, while Duke sits at 1-3.
After a tedious match of firing back and forth the game went into overtime.
SMU sophomore Juan Castillo sliced through the Blue Devil’s defense and connected with Ivo who sent the ball hurling 12 yards out from the goal.
Sophomore keeper Jaime Ibarra started in goal for the Mustangs and finished with a shut-out. He saved nine shots overall, including a key save that sent the game into overtime.
Coach Tim McClements believed his team did well especially with some outstanding performances by Zach Barnes, Adam Still, T.J. Nelson, and Aaron Simmons throughout the weekend.
Freshman Aaron Simmons and Sophomore Zach Barnes were named to the Duke Nike Classic All-Tournament Team.
The Mustangs continue their road trip to the Hurricane Classic on Sept. 9-11 in Tulsa. SMU faces two 2010 NCAA teams in the tournament. They are set to play Oklahoma Sept. 9 at 5 p.m. and No. 5 Connecticut on Sept. 11 at 11 a.m.
