MLive Media Group reporter Emily Lawler is scheduled to speak on behalf of her research on Dr. Larry Nassar’s conviction at 5:30 p.m. on March 1 in Umphrey Lee.

Emily Lawler is a Capitol/Business reporter. A graduate of Michigan State University, Lawler has devoted much of her time in and out of school to political journalism. Passionate about political and public affairs, Lawler thrives in highly controversial writing.

The buzz surrounding Nassar’s Olympic sexual assault scandals seemed too perfect for Lawler to cover. Nassar, 54, was the medical professional for the USA Gymnastics Team and also Michigan State University. In January 2018, Nassar was sentenced to 40-175 years in prison after more than 150 women voiced in court they had been sexually abused by him. The doctor’s sexual misconduct began over two decades ago.

Lawler began her coverage on the scandal over a year ago, prior to the January 2018 sentence. In a 2017 MLive article, Lawler writes on behalf of the victims whose voices had not been heard for over 20 years.

“Over the years, some of Nassar’s alleged victims say they were telling parents, coaches, counselors, MSU athletic trainers – even police – that, without consent or explanation, Nassar was digitally penetrating them in the vagina and anus during medical treatments for back, hip and other injuries,” Lawler wrote.
