Many freshmen on campus are unaware that SMU does indeed have a radio station, KPNI.
KPNI plays through Hughes-Trigg Student Center and “you can listen online at kpni.smu.edu and listen to the live stream through iTunes or WinAmp,” according to DJ Ryan Wolfe.
You can also find KPNI hosting different parties on the weekend including some dance parties and occasional “Rock The Hilltop” events on Fridays. “Rock The Hilltop” is an ‘open mic’ night that also features DJs (including Wolfe) and local bands such as Ulises (R&B), Stavely (Rock), and Brent Paxton (Pop).
The radio station is nothing short of professional; it’s comprised of a full staff of DJs, a tech department, a station manager, an assistant manager, a promotion manager, a music manager, an engineer, a webmaster, a division of journalism manager and an advertising manager.
KPNI’s goals as a radio station are to get “real” airtime (broadcasted on the FM radio) and to get more listeners.
Wolfe says that this year there was the largest amount of student sign-ups to be a DJ on the station.
KPNI plays all types of music including rock, techno, country, reggae, hip-hop and more.
“If you want to listen to a specific type of music, you can call in during a DJ’s show and request a song” Wolfe said. “For electronic music, check out ‘In the Mix with DJ Wolfe’ from 5-6 p.m. on Thursdays.”
There’s a Facebook page (search KPNI SMU Radio) to check out upcoming events and news. Students should also check out the schedule online at www.kpni.smu.edu to see live shows and when DJs are playing.
Right now, KPNI is working on updating the website, getting new DJs and shows, and are working on broadcasting the radio station throughout Umphrey Lee (RFOC) and Dedman Sports Center. The Granada on Greenville Avenue, sponsors KPNI as a college radio station by providing free tickets to give away on the radio and other prizes.
