The No. 3 seeded SMU women’s soccer team beat No. 2 Memphis, 1-0 on Saturday. Junior midfielder Claire Oates scored the lone goal in the 85th minute, heading in a corner kick. The Mustangs were coming off of a thrilling, penalty kick win against USF and their momentum continued into the Memphis game. They played stingy defense against the Tigers, allowing just seven shots, three of which came on goal. The win propelled the Mustangs to a 13-5-2 record on the season, while Memphis dropped to 14-4-2.

Oates’ goal was her 10th of the season, tying her with Allie Thornton for the team lead in that category. Katherine Herron picked up an assist on the play, her second of the season. Goalie Catie Brown did not let anything get past her, making three saves.

With the win, the Mustangs have clinched a birth in the AAC championship match, where they will play the top-seeded UConn Huskies in UConn’s stadium. SMU’s women’s soccer team has not made a championship game since 2004. The match will be played on Sunday, Nov. 6th at 1 p.m. CT and will be televised on ESPNU.
