Finding family fun this weekend in Dallas

Though Family Weekend means there are many great events planned on campus, be sure to show your family Dallas life outside of SMU.

For wholesome Texas size fun: With livestock, art exhibits, the Texas-OU football game and more fried food than you can fathom, you know Big Tex is back. The State Fair of Texas opens today at 10 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m. during the next 24 days. Buy advanced general admissions tickets at Kroger for $12.50.

For the food enthusiast: The Greek Food Festival of Dallas also starts this Friday. Catch a glimpse of American Idol Finalist Constantine Maroulis on stage Saturday at 9 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. General Admission is $5 and does not include food and drink. For the philanthropist: Brighton Collectibles kicks-off the “Power of Pink” jewelry sale at NorthPark Center this Saturday. Special guest Dr. Bourland of Dallas Breast Care Program from Presbyterian Hospital will speak at 8 a.m. in South Court near Dillard’s. Light refreshments and giveaways will follow. For the nature lover: Visit the Texas Discovery Gardens and see its Skies of Butterflies exhibit. General admission for all ages is $3. The exhibit is open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more info visit texasdiscoverygardens.org.

For the style obsessed: See an exhibit of costumes worn by women from Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor to Kate Winslet and Nicole Kidman. The Women’s Museum of Dallas presents “Starstruck: Hollywood Costumes and Designers, 1932-2006” will be open all weekend from noon to 5 p.m. Student tickets are just $3. For the cultured: Enjoy a day at the Dallas Museum of Art in Downtown Dallas followed by Italian lute music from Everett Redburn. Bring your student ID and access to both is only $5. The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and music begins at 3 p.m. Visit dallasmuseumofart.org.

For a lesson in Texas two-step: Cowboys Red River offers free lessons and a buffet on Fridays from 7 to 9 p.m., then show off your new moves until 2 a.m. No cover before 9 p.m. Visit cowboysdancehall.com.

For a load of laughs: “Two teams, one winner… you decide!” ComedySportz DFW presents improv comedy Friday at 8 p.m at the West End MarketPlace. Tickets are $15 at the door. The event is rated “E” for everyone. Call 214-521-LAFF.
