With the smell of kielbasas grilling, the sound of frostybeverages being poured and the sight of vibrant red and blue thatradiates Mustang spirit, it is good to have the football seasonfinally arrive back on the Hilltop.
Saturday, fans who have long been looking forward to makingtheir weekly pilgrimage to the green grass and shady trees willquench their thirst for tailgating at an event that is unique toSMU: the Boulevard.
The classic sights and sounds of the Boulevard past willcontinue as well as some brand-new spectacles. Tailgating willkickoff at 3 p.m. Be sure to look for:
• The Mustang Club’s inflatable helmet.
The helmet is a 15-foot-tall, replica of the new, dark blueMustang football helmet.
Stop by the helmet and check up on other games from around thecountry at the big-screen TV and see how SMU alumni party.
• Former SMU heroes.
Don’t be surprised to bump into SMU greats such as CraigJames or Bobby Leach.
This Saturday, SMU will honor former standout receiver JerryLevias. Levias was the first black scholarship athlete in the oldSouthwest Conference and was fifth in Heisman Trophy voting in1968.
• The Mustang cheer and dance teams.
Follow these sexy ‘Stangs down the Boulevard and to DoakWalker Plaza for a pre-game pep rally.
Get your ears ready, though. The teams won’t just havepom-poms. The two groups will be armed with megaphones and abullhorn to lead the cheers.
• The Mustang Band.
What would SMU game day be without the soul-soothing sounds thatthis Southern-style jazz band brings?
Be awed by the bands’ newest edition, feature twirlerKelli Montgomery, the top twirler in the nation.
• Food.
Whether it’s a baby backs with the Betas, kielbasa withthe KA’s or sausage with the Sig Ep’s, there’smore food than even the football team could eat.
• Urban cowgirls.
These ladies add to the “Southern-fried football”ambiance, decked out in a straw cowboy hat, jean skirt, SMUt-shirt, Prada shoes and Burberry or Coach purse (usually packedwith a full flask for inside the game).
These girls love their football and love the fact that girls upNorth will soon be freezing, and donning parkas come game days inthe next few weeks, while they’ll still be tailgatingcomfortably in the warm weather.
• Peruna(s).
Leading the parade down the Boulevard is the wild Shetlandhimself.
The new Peruna handlers are ready for some action as well. Lookfor the other Peruna too.
The masked warrior, whose identity is still a mystery, canboogie like it’s 1999 … Oklahoma State’s mascot,Pistol Pete, better watch out.
Be sure to make it from the Boulevard and into Ford Stadiumearly. Not only is there a pre-game show, the first 5,000 fans alsoget a set of SMU football trading cards.
