Sean Hannity, donning an ivory cowboy hat, played up to hismostly conservative Texas crowd at McFarlin Auditorium on Friday. KPNI – SMU Radio sponsored the live broadcast with Hannity,co-host of Fox News’ “Hannity and Colmes,” thatfocused on several political issues as well as an impromptuinterview with Sen. Ted Kennedy on the air.
“Can you imagine being a liberal and being heretoday?,” said Hannity, standing in front of a Statue ofLiberty backdrop.
Hannity explained that he supports President Bush and dismissedall the “false accusations” made by whom he called the”lying Democrats.” He said the Democrats sent anegative message to the United States military units by sayingtheir leader was a liar and a gang leader. He explainedBush’s decision to go to war by saying the United States.wasn’t aware of any biological weapons and needed to find outif any existed.
“We have got to fight back, and we have to defend thetruth,” he said.
In an effort to find this truth, Hannity interviewed Sen. KayBailey Hutchison of Texas. Jokingly, he asked the senator ifKennedy was nearby. When Hutchison’s answer was yes, Hannityoffered $1,000 to Hutchison’s favorite charity if she couldget Kennedy to do an interview.
Hutchison responded, saying, “Sean, you’re $1,000lighter,” and Kennedy took the phone.
Hannity’s interview with Kennedy was brief but powerful. The crowd remained almost silent.
“Sen. Kennedy, you called the President a liar and thatwas beyond the pale,” he said. Audience members roared insupport and waived their miniature American flags high in theair.
Many students in attendance were happy with the broadcast.”The search for the truth is one of the foundations of freespeech and free expression in our society and for that I am a bigfan,” Kyle Snyder, a first year business major said.
The interview with Kennedy left students with something to thinkabout. “I think it is unfortunate that the lasting impact ofhis comments will mislead Americans and lower the morale of thetroops,” Reed Hanson, a first year electrical engineeringmajor said.
