Leadership Consultant Council will invade the neighborhoods surrounding SMU in the spirit of Halloween as it collects non-perishable items for the North Texas Food Bank.
Emerging Leaders is a group of first-year students who possess exceptional leadership qualities and involvement within the community. Each year only 25 to 30 students are selected to participate.
First-year advertising and marketing major Omar Morales serves as coordinator for the Trick or Treat for Humanity project.
“Part of the Emerging Leaders duty is to come up with a community service project,” Morales said. “The idea was chosen by the Emerging Leaders and is well under way.”
Paper sacks with specific directions for collecting goods will be dropped off on doorsteps throughout neighborhood homes between 1 and 3 p.m. Sunday and picked up by 5 p.m. the following Saturday.
The collected goods will go to the North Texas Food Bank, which seeks to eliminate hunger by distributing food and grocery products through a network of nonprofit organizations. It also provides education and increase community awareness on issues
of hunger.
“Leaders are aiming high and hope to collect at least 1,000 pounds of nonperishable food items,” Morales said.
Cristin Lavelle, sophomore Spanish and history major, currently serves as the Emerging Leaders coordinator.
“It is important for first-year students to give back to the community which gives us so much support,” Lavelle said. “I am proud of the Emerging Leaders for organizing this on their own, and I look forward to the end result.”
The results of Trick or Treat for Humanities will be posted on the LCC Web site – http://people.smu.edu/lcc – one week after the boxes are picked up.
