Junior Kristy Watson and sophomore Asmara Sohail are the winners of the 2006 Hughes-Trigg Student Art Contest.
Watson’s photograph, “Cibolo Creek, Boerne, TX” and Sohail’s painting “Woman in Motion” were the winning pieces, which have been on display all week in the Hughes-Trigg Commons.
“A woman plays several roles all at once,” Sohail said about her painting, which is an abstract piece composed of four faces. “Whether she is a doctor, mother or lover, she is able to unite all these characteristics that make her truly feminine.”
“The interchanging of facial expressions and mixing of colors come together in describing the complexity of the female psyche,” she added.
Both contest winners will receive $250 and their artwork will be on permanent display in the student center.
“Our SMU students are very talented, and we are happy to provide this art contest as an avenue for them to display their talent. This has been our biggest art contest ever with 46 entries, consisting of drawings, paintings, sculptures and photographs. Most of the submissions came from students who are not art majors,” said Mariana Sullivan, the marketing representative for the student center.
