The Mustangs Men’s Lacrosse Club capped off their regular season with a perfect 16-0 record by defeating defending conference champions Texas State in the Lone Star Alliance Championship 11-6.
SMU secured a quick lead in the conference finals, starting the game on a 3-0 run. However, the Bobcats were able to respond to SMU’s offensive attack as they traded goals with the Mustangs for the remainder of the first half, making the score at half time 6-3 SMU.
In the second half, Texas State cut the lead to one as they put two shots past senior goalie Adam Connolly going into the fourth quarter. However, Connolly showed his poise and resiliency in the fourth quarter, only giving up one goal and allowing the offense to take control. Junior attack-man Nick Schultz led the Mustang offense, scoring four goals and an assist.
The Mustangs will travel to UC Irvine and Chapman University May 9-14 to compete in the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) National Championships.
In addition to a trip to the MCLA National Championships, SMU counted six first team-all conference players, including Connolly and Schultz, who also received defensive player of the year and offensive player of the years awards, respectively. This was Connolly’s second straight year being named the defensive player of the year.
