One day after TCU Coach Gary Patterson’s rant about SMU was released to the media, SMU’s head football coach June Jones responded with poise to what seems to be a misunderstanding.
“I’m kind of disappointed. I thought I gave them a compliment,” Jones said. “Obviously it got misconstrued to him, but that stuff happens.”
Coach Patterson took note of Coach Jones’ post-game comment about how TCU hasn’t changed much over the years. Coach Patterson took this to mean his team was being perceived as easy to beat and prepare for. He replied, “He (Jones) hasn’t changed much either, so if we want to get into those kinds of matches. But I don’t go there.”
Before the much anticipated SMU game last week, Jones said, “You are what you repeatedly do — excellence then is not an act but a habit.” Jones elaborated on his own comment saying, “TCU is number one because they believe those same things — excellence is not an action but a habit.”
This same idea from Coach Jones resurfaced Wednesday morning when Coach Jones answered questions from the media.
He said, “I know a loss sometimes make you say things you wish you hadn’t said…I wanted to tell him we try to copy what he does. They (TCU) don’t change. They do what they do, and that’s what good teams do.”
One of Coach Patterson’s statements released to the media Tuesday said, “Don’t look for any help coming from us ever again.” Then added, “SMU got a lot of help from us over the last three or four years.”
On Wednesday, Coach Jones acknowledged their help over the years and said, “I know he (Patterson) said he wasn’t going to help us anymore, but he probably guaranteed a sellout next year.”
As for Coach Jones and Coach Patterson’s relationship, Coach Jones said he will probably reach out to him “after he settles down a little bit.”
