The debate over the George W. Bush Library complex hits local airwaves tonight on the debut episode of “Think.” The half-hour program will air at 7:30 on KERA-Channel 13 and is hosted by Krys Boyd.
Boyd will host Professor James F. Hollifield, director of the Tower Center for Political Studies, and Professor Kathleen A. Wellman, who teaches history, to discuss the campus’ reaction to the Bush complex and the advantages or disadvantages of landing the library.
Hollifield has been outspoken in his support of the complex coming to SMU. In a New York Times op/ed piece, he said SMU should not make the same mistake Duke University did with the Richard Nixon library. Duke students and faculty rallied against the complex, and eventually Nixon supporters decided not to house it at Duke.
Wellman was quoted in a Jan. 17 Times article saying she thought the Bush institute would overshadow other work at SMU.
The show is the first extended discussion of the library on television, and Boyd says the format of her show will allow for greater depth and insight.
“There are valid arguments on both sides,” she said.
Boyd hosts a radio show of the same name weekdays from noon – 2 p.m. on KERA 90.1, and she said it was a matter of time before there was a television show to go along with her radio program.
“I want people who don’t understand the issue to understand better when they leave,” she said.
