Saturday morning the Memphis Tigers proved why they are the No. 11 team in the nation and are undefeated in Conference USA.
The Mustangs were able to stay with the dominating Memphis through the first 14 minutes of the game. The Tigers’ lead did not reach double digits until there were six minutes left in the half.
But when the Tigers started shooting, and making, three-point shots the Mustangs couldn’t keep up. Memphis shot 60 percent from the three-point line for the game including a 5-5 game from Doneal Mack.
Ike Ofoegbu led the Mustangs with 17 points, but the rest of the team couldn’t pick up the slack. SMU got points out of all seven players who played, but other than Ofoegbu no one scored more than eight points.
On the other side of the court, the Tigers used 15 players and got double digits from four players.
Turnovers were not the problem (the Mustangs only had 12); it was shooting percentages for both teams.
SMU could only manage 36 percent from the floor, and against a 61-percent performance from Memphis the Mustangs didn’t stand a chance. SMU also lost the rebounding battle 35-22, giving Memphis a second chance points advantage by nine points.
The Mustangs will return home for a short two-game home stand with a rematch against Houston, to be shown on CSTV, and SMU’s first look at the Rice Owls.
Tip-off will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Moody Coliseum.
