I am glad that for only the second time all year, Student Senate received coverage in The Daily Campus. Sadly, the DC seemed uninformed about the resolution that was affirmed by the Senate. As the chair of the Research & Recommendations Ad Hoc Committee and an author of the resolution in question, I feel qualified to speak directly to the issue of what our resolution does. We have simply consolidated several committees that deal with student concerns into one administrative entity.
No committees have been eliminated; rather we will be able to devote more students to the pursuit of environmental activism, while at the same time being able to ensure that those students are able to address other real concerns. Sadly, Ed Board seemed to miss out on this. Rather, it decided to manufacture a story that happened to be inaccurate.
Had Ed Board read the actual bill, it would see that the first specific charge of the consolidated Student Concerns Committee is to review university environmental policy. That doesn’t sound like general neglect of the environment. Ed Board needs to get all the facts before writing an argument like the one that appeared in Wednesday’s paper.
By the way, if the DC was serious about finding out what Senate was doing for campus lately, maybe it would send a reporter down to our meetings weekly, rather than only when it could print something controversial and sling mud when it is woefully under-informed about the substance of our discussions.
So DC, let’s pose the question to you that you posed to us. What have you done for students lately? Contribute to misinformation and inaccuracy. Congratulations.
