The Mustangs swim back into action this Friday, facing off against Texas A&M at the Student Rec Center Natatorium in College Station. The SMU men are coming off an impressive performance Jan. 16 at the SMU Invitational.
The Mustangs placed third at the SMU Invitational, falling to No.2 Michigan, which placed first, and No. 4 Florida who took second.
This, and many other strong performances, leaves the Mustangs ranked first in points swimming and diving in Conference USA.
At the SMU Invitational, junior Edward Downes had a superior performance, swimming the 200 breast in 2:01.87, finishing second and breaking his career best time. He also recorded his career best time in the 200 IM, finishing second with a time of 1:49.07.
Sophomore Pontus Renholm is another key to success against the A&M. At the SMU Invitational, Renholm hardly missed making a NCAA provisional-qualifying time, swimming to a second place finish in the 200 back at 1:45.15.
Sophomore diver Matthew Culbertson has been stepping up for the Mustangs the past few meets, diving to a second place finish in the three-meter springboard at the SMU Invitational. With his season-best score of 366.05, Culbertson qualified for the Zone Diving Championships for the second time this season.
The Aggies are coming into this meet off of a successful weekend. Meanwhile, the Big 12 also honored A&M’s sophomore Balazs Makany for his performance against LSU. Makany was named swimmer of the week after winning the 100 and 200-yard freestyle against LSU.
