Luis Lama might have been told, “You are the Weakest Link. Goodbye,” this past weekend at the taping of the NBC television show, “Weakest Link,” in Burbank, Calif.
Lama, a senior Lambda Chi Alpha, joined over 40 contestants from around the nation for “Link’s Greek Week.” The episode Lama appeared in should air sometime during November sweeps week, a time when networks try to increase their ratings with specials and guest appearances.
Lama wore his jersey on the show, representing Lambda Chi, as well as SMU.
When he arrived at the Los Angeles International Airport last Thursday, Lama did not know if he would be on the show.
” I decided to just take the [situation] as a free trip,” Lama said.
The free trip included being picked up from the airport in a limousine and staying at the Hilton Hotel in Universal City. Just outside of Los Angeles, Universal City is home to Universal Studios and the City Walk, where Lama and other contestants spent their free time.
Lama said filming took about two hours, although the actual coverage will only be about 22 minutes.
George Gray, the host of “Weakest Link”, is witty, Lama says. Gray picked on Lama and the other contestants.
Lama says that the interview, in spite of the public’s misconceptions, is set up by the show.
“They [producers] feed you with things to say…make it look like we’re
[the contestants] against each other.”
The application process included a 20-minute phone quiz filled with random questions on entertainment and geography. Lama also had to take a personality quiz including questions about the craziest thing he had ever done. He was also required to send his picture to the show.
Lama signed a 24-page contract stating that all the footage during filming could be used. It also assured that Lama had no previous contact with an NBC employee, and that he would not reveal the outcome of the show until it aired.
