SMU Men’s Tennis traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma Sunday to face off against conference rivals The Tulsa Golden Hurricane (10-5). The Mustangs fell to the No. 17 ranked Golden Hurricanes in a heartbreaking match (4-3).
Junior Artem Baradach had an outstanding victory against the Golden Hurricane, beating his opponent in a decisive two sets (6-4, 6-4). No. 55 junior, Robin Fahgen, came back after winning his first match to defeat Tulsa’s Philip Stephens, who plays in the top spot for the Golden Hurricane, in three sets (6-7, 6-4, 6-4).
The Mustangs continued to dominate in doubles after Fahgen and freshman Gaston Cuadranti won their fourth straight match, and sophomores Darren Walsh and Adham el-Effendi extended their win streak to five after defeating their Tulsa opponents.
The game decision came down to a third set tiebreaker (6-4, 6-7, 7-5) in which Tulsa’s Marko Ballok defeated sophomore el-Effendi. The Mustangs return to action this Sunday at noon against Texas.
Women’s tennis had a strong victory against North Carolina State Friday, improving its season record to 12-2. The Mustangs toppled the No. 62 Wolfpack, winning the match 5-2.
In singles, junior Nicole Briceno beat Neils Barringer at the three spot (6-4, 6-4). Senior Kristen Reid came back from losing the first set beat North Carolina’s Diana Mortlock (0-6, 6-2, 6-4). Seniors Kseniia Tokarievea and Monica Neveklovska both had outstanding victories. Tokarievea blanked Pender Sessoms winning in two sets (6-0, 6-0).
The Mustangs swept the doubles category, with senior Conference USA Player of the Week Natalia Bubien and junior partner Pavi Francis having an outstanding match. The duo defeated N.C. State’s top duo, No. 33 Lenka Hojckova and Berkeley Brock.
The Mustangs return to action against the Arkansas Razorbacks on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
