The SMU women’s golf team is back in action this weekend, opening up the spring portion of its 2008-09 schedule at the Kiawah Island Women’s Intercollegiate.
The tournament will be held in Kiawah Island, South Carolina at the Cougar Point and Osprey Courses.
Not only does this tournament mark the beginning of SMU’s spring play, but all of NCAA women’s golf begins this weekend. The tournament is set to take place from Sunday through Tuesday. Play is set to begin at 9 a.m. Sunday and Monday, and an early start of 8:45 on Tuesday.
Recently, senior golfer Kate Ackerson was honored by DFW Link Magazine. The magazine awarded her the Amateur Golfer of the Year distinction. Ackerson enters this portion of the year healthy, after struggling with many injuries in previous seasons.
Freshman Tanya Wadhwa was also honored by DFW Link, which named her as girl’s junior player of the year.
Wadhwa is part of the strong 2009 recruiting class for head coach Todd Selders. She shows a very bright future, winning such honors as the Texas Women’s Open last summer.
The Kiawah Island Women’s Intercollegiate is the largest collegiate event held in the country, hosting a total of 46 teams. Among the schools participating are Miami, Florida, Nebraska, Kentucky, Oregon and Oregon State. Conference USA foes, UCF and Marshall will also be among the contenders.
