Beta Theta Pi is back on SMU’s campus with a ‘different’ focus.
Jordan See, who graduated last May from the University of Florida, is currently the leadership consultant to the Beta fraternity. He has been on the SMU campus helping for the past three weeks and plans on being here another eight. There are 59 new members as of Sunday who will be initiated April 9.
“We didn’t want to ‘cap’ anything; almost 400 people came by our table to talk to us about Beta,” See said.
Beta had a sorority competition with their recruitment to help get the word out about taking a new pledge class for the first time since December 2005. Sorority girls could wear “Go Beta” buttons, hang banners outside of their house, and more to gain points for their sorority up until Sunday when the formal pledge ceremony was held, explained See.
The house that won was Delta Gamma. The winners received $100 towards their philanthropy and the first serenade from the Beta Chapter, as well as an ice cream social to get to know the members.
“We are bringing a different type of fraternity to campus,” See said. “Our tag line is ‘gentlemen, leaders, and scholars’ and the guys are heavily involved in numerous organizations,” See said.
See said that the new Betas are an incredible group of diverse men who want to give people a different option.
“We want to lead by principle and be gentlemen at all times,” See said.
The Beta fraternity is also expected to have the highest Inter-fraternity Council GPA, which is a cumulative of 3.554.
Full time employee for Beta, Phil Fernandez, director of recruitment and expansion said, “We are going to have a good time and do what every fraternity does but we are going to do it a different way. We are going to be the guys that are in class expecting to learn something and the guys outside of the classroom leading the organizations on campus,” he said.
