“Just Friends” won’t win any Oscars, but it will make you laugh at least once or twice. In a season of award-grubbing biopics and pretentious dramas, “Just Friends” is a breath a fresh air for comedy lovers.
The plot is actually on the weak side. Chris (Ryan Reynolds), an attractive but embittered record executive who was once an overweight male cheerleader, reluctantly returns to his hometown and reenters the life of Jamie (Amy Smart), his pretty and popular best friend – whom he also happened to be in love with.
As Chris tries one last time to win over Jamie, he must deal with a plethora of obstacles, including his current client (Anna Faris), his younger brother (Chris Marquette) and a fellow competitor (Chris Klein) for Jamie’s affections.
What makes this film stand out is the incredible talent of the ensemble cast. The film is obviously a vehicle for Reynolds, and he delivers with a sardonic charm. Smart is generally appealing, if lacking somewhat in substance. The real standouts are Anna Faris as the Christina Aguilera wannabe and Chris Marquette as the annoying younger brother. Both characters steal every scene they’re in with terrific comedic timing and line delivery.
Faris’ character will leave you in stitches with her vocal performances, while the love/hate relationship between the two brothers is one of the movie’s high points.
